Late Century Dream: Movements in the US Indie Music Underground

Looks like "Late Century Dream" is a Superchunk song from my Google image search.  I sense a theme developing here.  Like "Our Band Could Be Your Life" except it pops around geographically.  I skipped around a lot too based on my interest.  Learned that Greg Anderson was in Engine Kid.  The more I learn about that dude, the more impressed with his resume I become.  Renaissance man, or something.

Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records - John Cook

Burning through the holiday reading stack.  It's weird reading a history of something that happened only 20 years ago that you were kind of familiar with at the time that it happened.  "Wait for the news in the history books. Like junkies who hate their heroin."  This book was just as much about Superchunk the band as it was about the label.  I have fond memories of cruising Parmatown Mall in my friend Doug's Ford Fairmont blasting "No Pocky for Kitty" on cassette and saying: "Superchunk is super punk."  I don't think I've listened to a note of Superchunk since that record.  Book was okay.  All of Jon Wurster's quotes were funny.  Not enough content on Neutral Milk Hotel, which is what I was looking for.  Know the name Arcade Fire, but that's about it.  Kudos to Merge Records for such a long history!

Love Goes to Buildings On Fire: Five Years in New York that Changed Music Forever - Will Hermes

Holiday reading.  Cranking through books since I don't really have to do anything and college football isn't on.  This book was a chronological look at music in New York City in the seventies.  What was cute about the book, and the hook, is that no one genre was featured and it painted a picture of the world where salsa and punk were happening at the same time in the same place.  My favorite parts, since I'm on this "classical" kick is the common man/working class stories of Steve Reich and Philip Glass.  Regular Joes, they seemed, and Thurston Moore was right to use their moving company, Chelsea Light Moving, as a band name.  Good name for a band, that one.

The Rest is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century - Alex Ross

Holiday reading.  New Year.  Goal to read more.  This could be an excellent and thorough history of 20th Century "classical" music or it could not.  I don't know.  I don't know enough about the subject to comment.  I enjoyed the book and it seems like a great stepping off point into further explorations on the topic.  I took a lot of notes.
