I went through all 50 of Julian Cope's Krautrocksampler: One Head's Guide to the Great Kosmische Musik - 1968 Onwards top 50 this year. Sometimes, it seemed like a waste because I did not dig a ton of the records. What I liked out of the genre, I already knew. But you never know unless you do some digging.

This one started off with some cat singing Hobbit-style in German and ended pretty much the same way. I'm glad this is over.

This is the last gig of the 1971 U.S. tour - a replacement date for a concert that was originally schedeuled on October 30th at the Music Hall in Cincinnati. This show is also the last time the band ever performs two songs which had been staples of their setlist for a couple of years - "The Embryo" and "Cymbaline." Two months later, the Floyd started gigging again and "Dark Side of the Moon" was a big chunk of the set.

Pink Floyd played some of the best places on this tour. The Taft Auditorium is a 2,500-seat theater and was built in 1928. Two to three thousand comfortable seats seems perfect for a gig like this. It's not like you are the Boss and need to really need to feel the audience playing the Floyd's set at this point.

Originally opened as a movie theater in 1928 and now the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts, the Beatles played here in 1964 and Bob Marley played his last show here in 1980. No known recording.

Roy Lichtenstein - Diane Waldman

I had no idea that Roy Lichtenstein lived in Cleveland for six years and both of his children were born here. He worked for Republic Steel and a bunch of other places in CLE. When I told my son that I never knew the Lichtenstein/CLE connection until reading this book, he told me, in response, that books can teach you a lot.

Lichtenstein showed at the Ten-Thirty Gallery @ 1515 Euclid Avenue (according to the book), which would have put the gallery in Playhouse Square. 1030 Euclid Avenue is still standing, home to Loretta's Restaurant, and it kind of makes more sense that it would have been there, or maybe started there and then moved, according to the name of the place.



He also showed at the Art Colony Galleries @ 11504 Euclid Avenue. From a quick Google maps search, it looks like the building that housed this gallery is gone.

Looking at the pictures of that great old room, and reading a little bit about the history of the building, I would have hoped this boot would have been better sounding. A distant audience recording. Oh well. Side note: the Neutral Milk Hotel dude sold this place out yesterday. Capacity = 1260. Who would have thought?

I know more about Raymond Carver's life and drinking and writing from the people who knew him than I ever thought possible. Dude moved around a lot, took years off of writing because he was boozing, and died young. Sometimes, the book seemed like it was a little too much information.

Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S. Thompson - Jann S. Wenner and Corey Seymour

Reading this decent oral biography of Hunter S. Thompson, I was reminded of how much I used to love Hunter S. Thompson's writing. Still do, I guess, but I don't think I've read anything by him since he killed himself. I don't know why. I'd try to be clever and say something bad about the association with Johnny Depp, but I don't think that's it. I am definitely going to read more Hunter S. Thompson soon.

This book offered plenty of insight into the life of the famous Gonzo journalist. Knowing a little about him, it was kind of what I expected - lots of boozing and drugging and erratic behaviour. Kind of amazing to think that he made it to 67 years old considering his hard life. One thing that annoyed me about the book was that Jann Wenner quotes himself extensively throughout and shapes the book through his, and Rolling Stone's, worldview. I get that you were there, man, but I don't need to hear about it.

Cleveland rocks. Excellent recording. Very nice bass throughout. The taper, or people around the taper (who I read was a guitarist for Pere Ubu [any truth to this?]) talked a lot during the set and misidentified "Set the Controls . . ." as "Astrominy Domine." One of my favorite Pink Floyd boots ever, obviously.

I listened to this show while hanging Christmas lights. You see, I got burned a couple of times, waiting too long to hang lights and getting stuck in freezing rain and falling with the ladder on the roof. So, I get out as soon as I can in November while the weather is still nice. Nobody says that you have to turn them on. Not a great recording, this one, but it sounded perfect coming from the boom box set up in the garage.

The Loew’s State opened its doors on October 6, 1928 as a premier picture palace of Rhode Island with a seating capacity is 3232. One of the main draws of the theater was not the films it showed, but its opulent design, created by The Rapp brothers. The Rapps (George and C.W.) were architects who made their name by designing beautiful movie houses, complete with chandeliers hanging from the ceilings, marble columns and detailed moldings on the walls. The theatre earned the distinction of being named to the National Register of Historic Places for its "period of significance" being the Golden Age of the movies, from 1925 to 1949. By the late 50’s and 60’s the theater saw more live concerts as a way to keep the doors open which is now known as “The Golden Age of Rock n Roll”.

By 1972 The Loew’s State was turned into the Palace Concert Theater mainly for rock concerts. The building was starting to show its age and the rock audience did not help. The theater got run down with ceiling problems that leaked, too much smoking and abuse with little or no maintenance. Eventually it closed down for a period and there was even talk of demolishing the building. That aside, some of the best rock concerts were held at the Palace and we thank all the promoter’s that made it possible.

The theater opened its doors again now as the Ocean State. It ran another four years under that name and more rock concerts still came to visit the theater. During this period a new addition was added.
