OFF! at the Grog Shop

I missed CIDER because I was told that they were going on later than they did. I got to watch them take their equipment off stage and that was great. Very punk rock. Missed the other band play because I went down to WRUW to watch Destructor play live on the radio. Hopefully watching Matt Flammable up close and seeing how he does it will have a positive effect on my drumming. OFF! were fantastic. As much as there is about this band that seems too cleverly pre-packaged and, in spite of the fact that Keith Morris rambled on stage like a punk rock Abe Simpson, it's what's in the grooves that matters - to quote a phrase - and OFF! has got it. Sounding awfully like early Black Flag, OFF! played all of their songs very well and I went home feeling like I reconnected with paret of me that has been lost for awhile.

Krautrocksampler 50 Friday - No. 12 - Can - Tago Mago

The first part of this record is kind of like a dance record. Like I could see some hip rap dude sampling the record. And then it falls off into the experimental abyss for the second half of the record. Fading. Also, it felt like this record could have been recorded by a one man band at several times during the record.

Krautrocksampler 50 Friday - No. 11 - Can - Soundtracks

More conventional than the debut or maybe my ears were waiting for it. "Mother Sky" is another long jammer that I am sure has set many a young musical explorer on their path.

Krautrocksampler 50 Friday - No. 10 - Can - Monster Movie

Sounding a little bit like early Grateful Dead at times, I really enjoyed this record. I know that I've heard the song "Yoo Do Right" before by somebody. Was it the Volta Sound, maybe? I don't know. Good record.

The Buzzard - John Gorman

I did not listen to WMMS that much while growing up. I remember hearing Mr. Leonard once and that's about it. I never listened to music that much on the radio past Casey Kasem as a little kid and I was too punk rock for WMMS as a teenager. As an adult, I listened to Browns games on WMMS when they weren't on WTAM. So, I did not have much interest, besides that in "general Cleveland music history," in reading this book. It was a Christmas give from my mother a few years ago. I dumped coffee on it almost immediately and let it sit on the bookshelf unread.

My bad. It was good book - no matter how corny and annoying commercial radio is and always will be. The book was well-written and very interesting. A must read is any book that mentions Tokyo Shapiro.

There is something comforting in the thought that no matter what changes, many things remain the same. Also, there is something beautiful in a simple life driven by consistency.

Krautrocksampler 50 Friday - No. 9 - Ash Ra Tempel - Join Inn
