The Big Payback - Dan Charnas

This was a really long book about the hip hop business - from its humble roots in discos, parks, and rec rooms in the 1970s to today, where it really is big business. There are a lot of rap clothing lines now and this book had a lot about commercial radio in it, which is really not my thing. However, I love the idea of cutting records and selling them out of the trunk of your car. Nobody seems to do that anymore. I'm always on the lookout for the new rap or the new punk, you know, creating your own world and doing it.

Amsterdman, The Netherlands
June 26, 1971

Careful With That Axe, Eugene
Cymbaline
The Embryo
Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
A Saucerful Of Secrets

Great bass-heavy recording. There was a bunch of spoken/yelling word in "The Embryo" that I have never heard before. The crowd yelled, "We Want More!" and The Pink Floyd came out and kicked their asses with "A Saucerful Of Secrets." Good show.

The New Salem Witch Hunters at the Happy Dog

I saw the Witch Hunters for the first time 21 years ago. It was at the Babylon A Go Go as my eyes started to open to rock music as a living breathing thing - something that was happening at the moment, not just at an old Who concert. Dave Atkins jumped in the crowd a couple of times at the Babylon and I tried to avoid him. Not much has changed in 21 years. Dave Swanson started playing second guitar and then moved to drums. Dave Atkins still walks the bar. Beautiful. If you are asking if you can still do it into your fifties, the answer is yes. Yes, you can.

Krautrocksampler 50 Friday - No. 25 - Faust - So Far

I told my kids, while listening to this record over dinner, this sounds like music made by crazy people. The kids disagreed. They said it sounded like old time music. Or Christmas music. They were both right.

The crowd was kind of noisy in this on this recording, but there was this one point, after the raga section of "Set the Controls", after the tom tom fill cut through the arena like a Japanese bullet train, when the crowd was pretty quiet.

Krautrocksampler 50 Friday - No. 24 - Faust - Faust

Some rock and some found sound audio collage nonsense. Reminded me of Olivia Tremor Control. I could take it or leave it, really.

Earth and Terminal Lovers at the Grog Shop

I finally got to see Earth. Thrilling. Indeed. The Terminal lovers were the highlight for me. Still jamming after all these years.

June 12, 1971

Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
Cymbaline

There may be a song missing on this boot but the announcer does his thing and they jump right into "Set the Control . . ." Cool moment. Decent enough audience recording. The chorus is loud and proud on "Atom Heart Mother."

Krautrocksampler 50 Friday - No. 23 - Cosmic Jokers - Gilles Zeitschiff

There were times when I thought Nico joined the Jokers on this record. Other times, it was some other lady's voice exchoing with the space age sound effects played along side the spacy german speaking. Pass.

Grunge is Dead - Greg Prato

I remember feeling like grunge was dead before it started. It was a stupid trend that was overly commercial almost right out of the gate. I was at the record release party for "Nevermind" and saw Nirvana at the Empire Concert Club shortly after the record came out. Urge Overkill opened and I thought they were they better band. I always liked Mudhoney but haven't listened to that band, not a note that I'm aware of, since "Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge." Their covers of the Dicks and Spacemen 3 opened doors for me. I remember listening to "Badmotorfinger" on cassette in my brother's Renault Alliance and digging it. I met Pearl Jam when they opened for the Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chilli Willie at the Music Hall. Eddie Vedder was kind of quiet. We talked about the Screaming Trees, who I also met at the Babylon A Go Go for a few minutes before the conversation petered out. "Uh, do you guys have any beer?" I loved the Screaming Trees twenty years ago and listened to them again for the first time in well over a dozen years while reading this book. They rocked, I think, but I ultimately thought that I was wasting my time by checking them out again because you only have so much time to listen to music, and, you know, it's the Screaming Trees.

This book was decent enough and informative but I don't care about this music anymore.

Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun

Good sounding set. Plenty of boom from the room on this recording. My suggestion would be to just play "Astronomy Domine" and leave it at that.

June 4, 1971

Atom Heart Mother
Careful With That Axe, Eugene
Fat Old Sun
The Embryo
Echoes
Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
Cymbaline
A Saucerful Of Secrets

I was bugging out at some point during Atom Heart Mother, which is a weak opener when there is no orchestra or chorus with the band, finally catching the groove when a truck or bus drove by, I don’t know which, and blew a bunch of dirt in my face and mouth. I had dirt in my mouth for the rest of this show.

Krautrocksampler 50 Friday - No. 22 - The Cosmic Jokers - Sci Fi Party

The jokes that the Cosmic Jokers are telling in this record are in German, so I did not get them. I literally did not get the jokes.
