Le Freak - Nile Rodgers

This book reminded me of what a great song "Let's Dance" by David Bowie is.  Also, Chic had a lot of good songs.  Otherwise, this book is kind of lightweight with everything making sense all of the time.

The Last Holiday: A Memoir - Gil Scott-Heron

It's hard to believe that Gil Scott-Heron wrote a memoir that does not include prison or crack, but he did it.  Published as a work in progress and assembled by editors, you have to believe that he was going to get to that before he died.  Brother Gil can tell a story and certainly can write but there was surprisingly little inner insight revealed in this book.

Happy Birthday, Horace Silver!

"For instance, Cleveland is a dead town for jazz.  It had two clubs, and the first time I played there with the Messengers, the response was great.  The last few times, though, the turnouts haven't been good.  I asked to find out if it was me or my group or hard times.  I found out that the people just aren't coming out anymore."

 - Horace Silver (1958 to Down Beat Magazine)

I guess he wasn't kidding.  Horace Silver played in Cleveland in Dec./Jan. 1955/1956, Sept. 1956, Jan. 1957, May 1957 and Sept./Oct. 1957.  After this interview, according to the Plain Dealer, Horace Silver did not return to Cleveland until May, 1961 to a different room out of the East Side.

Detroit Jazz Festival 2012

Just to show you how much I know, now in its 33rd year, this major jazz festival is only a couple of hours drive away.  It's huge.  It all Labor Day weekend.  There are a ton of acts.  Last minute, we went today to see Bernard "Pretty" Purdie and Reuben Wilson play.  Fantastic.  Kind of crowded and a little bit crazy to deal with, with our kids at least, but definitely going to hit this event up again next year with a little more planning.

Blue Note Records: The Biography - Richard Cook

The problem with this book:

"Now! (1969), with its gang of cooing vocalists, and the bleary Head On (1971) suggests a disastrous downturn in his abilities, and until a magnificent return to straight-ahead music in the eighties and nineties, it seemed as if Hutcherson's capacity to play up to his strengths had deserted him."

Yeah, I disagree.

Kids Of The Black Hole: Punk Rock In Postsuburban California - Dewar MacLeod

This book was more scholarly that you normally get out of the punk rock book genre but not so scholarly that I was bored with it.  The book dealt mainly with the suburbs' effect on punk rock and hardcore and what hapenned when non-artist teenagers started getting involved.  The book ended with Black Flag but that's really just the beginning.  Worth reading.

Jad Fair @ Gallery Wolfy Part II

The kids and I went on a bus adventure to this art opening and then took the bus out to mom's work and then went back to the art opening.  What a night.  I loved every bit of what I saw there and would like to see more art from Mr. Fair.  The kids dug it too although they didn't really want to speak to the artist after their introduction.  Star struck, shy or little punks?  You decide.

Too Much Magic - James Howard Kunstler

I was a big fan of "The Long Emergency" when it came out - probably because I was in law school at the time and looking for the world to end quickly, preferably before the bar exam.  That did not happen, nor is the world going to end in my lifetime.  All bets are off for when after I'm dead, however.  Who knows what's going to happen?  While I'm sure that the world is not going to end during my lifetime, it sure is going to suck and this book tells you why.  Peak oil.  Over population.  Energy crisis.  Economy collapse.  Ineffective government.  It's all here in this book.  And JHK is also going to tell you that no amount of technological advancement is going stop the bum rush.  He even predicts a world without the internet.  Imagine that!  He's not saying the sky is falling if you believe that it's true.  I'd recommend this book and "The Long Emergency" if you want a taste of why the world is broken and why it is not going to get fixed.  And you can find his blog on the internet, while it's still here, for daily updates on the slow apocalypse.

Retromania: Pop Culture's Addiction to Its Own Past - Simon Reynolds

An in-depth look at the recycling of popular culture through the eyes of a music critic.  Such trends as Northern Soul and people like Billy Childish and groups like Sha Na Na are explained.  I certainly openly mock anybody who is enthusiastic about some facet of retro culture as being lame and out of it unless it is the facet of retro culture that I am enthusiastic about.  Then, I'm all for it.
